How to make Homemade Paint

Homemade paint is great especially because kids love to paint so much! If you have a happy and creative toddler you’ll be needing a lot of paint!

Puff Paint

Get ready!

Flour

Water

Salt

Food coloring

Get set!

Mix equal amounts of flour, salt and water in a bowl.

Pour into four or more small cups and color with food coloring.

Go paint!

Pour into squeeze bottles like ketchup or mustard bottles. Children love squeezing out interesting paint designs. The paint will dry raised and shiny!

Homemade Paint - Cornstarch Based

Get ready!

Medium saucepan

1/2 cup cornstarch

1/2 cup cold water

4 cups boiling water

Small jars or plastic containers

Tempera paint, dry or liquid

Get set!

Measure cornstarch into saucepan and add cold water to cornstarch and stir to make a smooth paste.

Stir in boiling water. Place saucepan over medium-low heat and stir until boiling. Boil 1 minute; remove from heat. Cool.

Spoon about 1/2 cup of thickened cornstarch mixture into each container, using a different cup for each color. For each color, stir 1 teaspoon dry tempera or 1 tablespoon liquid tempera into cornstarch mixture.

If paint is too thick, stir in 1 teaspoon water at a time until desired consistency is achieved.

Store in refrigerator. This recipe makes about 4 cups of paint.

Basic Poster Paint - Homemade Paint

Get ready!

Small plastic containers

1/4 cup flour

1 cup water

3 tablespoons powdered tempera paint per container

2 tablespoons water per container

1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent or liquid starch per container

Get set!

Pour flour into saucepan and slowly add 1 cup water while stirring constantly until you make a smooth paste.

Heat the mixture while, stirring constantly until the paste begins to thicken.

Cool.

Put 1/4 cup paste into each small container and add 3 tablespoons of powdered tempera paint and 2 tablespoons water to each container.

To achieve a matte finish, add liquid starch. For a glossy finish, add liquid detergent.

Cover each paint container for storage.

Go paint!

Homemade Paint - Detergent Poster Paint

Get ready!

Small jars or plastic containers

1 tablespoon clear liquid detergent per container

2 teaspoons powdered tempera paint per container

Get set!

In each small container, mix together 1 tablespoon liquid detergent and 2 teaspoons powdered tempera paint.

This recipe makes enough for one painting session.
